Based in Brittany at the Kalil Tattoo Family studio, Calvin is the youngest of the Moktar clan and an award-winning expert in black and grey realism tattoos.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Kalil Moktar Sr, Calvin was a keen artist as a kid, filling notebook after notebook with pop culture figures and Japanese-inspired art and prints. Used to seeing his dad tattooing from the living room couch, Calvin puts his love of the industry down to the ambience he felt in the room watching his father tattoo his oldest brother.

His first tattoo was a small bomb on his dad’s calf, and he’s grown remarkably as an artist since then, winning prizes at a host of conventions around the world. His self-described “fusion style” has many different influences – mostly realism and Japanese – which enables him the ability to turn his hand to almost any design.

Calvin’s first big win was for ‘Best of Show’ at the 2015 Chaudes-Aigues tattoo festival. He’d go on to take multiple accolades over the following years, including ‘Best of Saturday’ at Deauville Tattoo Fest in 2017, ’Best Black and Grey’ at the 2017 Cezanne Tattoo Convention, then 1st place neo-traditional at the International New York Tattoo Show in 2019. Along with his artistic family he runs the Corsair Tattoo Ink festival in Brittany, which is celebrating its fifth year in 2022.

His incredible work is made possible with Cheyenne rotary machines and cartridges from KWADRON, as well as tattoo inks from World Famous Ink, which has one of the greatest ranges of colour in our store.

Scroll through Calvin’s work and you’ll find a diverse mix of tattoo styles, from photorealistic portraits through delicate nature work and even colourful, bold designs that show he’s more than just a black and grey expert.
